KEVIN
PHIRI
Songwriter
History
Born in Dundee, Scotland in 1984.....Kevin Phiri is a Zambian Songwriter. Growing up in the Uk and in Zambia he was influenced by classic Rock, Pop and Country music. As a youngstar he was divided between his love for music or playing for his beloved Manchester United.
The dream of being a football player died when his Father moved the family back to Zambia. It was there that his love for music and songwriting really started. He was a huge fan of the Backstreet Boys, loved their songs...at the time he was in a 'boyband' of his own with some friends of his.During that time he wanted to be a performing artist.
That all changed when he wanted to find out which one of the Backstreet Boys wrote his favourite song on the album....To his surprise none of them!!, but the name Max Martin caught his eye. He had writing credits on most of the music kevin was listening to at the time. And that was it.... the 13 year old Kevin wanted to be a songwriter. He wrote his first song shortly thereafter. He later went on to learn how to play the guitar, study music and sound engineering at Emendy Sound and Music Technology College in Pretoria South Africa.
Songwriting
Kevin started writing Pop music and RnB, later branching into Pop/Rock music. In the fall of 2012 he fell in love with Country Music and Nashville(Music City). Currently, he predominantly writes Country Music. He plans on moving to Nashville someday and have a full time career as a Songwriter. His a keen student of the Craft of Songwriting and loves the creative process and power of songs. He is patiently waiting on his 'Big break', that door to open which his been knocking on for some time.
He wants to educate young upcoming writers in Africa on how to hone and polish their craft. As the music industry in Africa is not as lucrative as overseas. And songwriters in Africa are not appreciated or effectively compensated.
"Why do i write songs?...... Because i am Monumentally dysfunctional, it's part of the cathartic process....if i didn't write i would probably need a Shrink!!!
